According to Australian Aboriginal mythology, the Wawalag Sisters were ancient deities who traveled to Earth to name all the plants and animals. One night, they fell asleep next to a sacred whirlpool inhabited by a Snake God. Angered by their presence, the Snake God emerged from the water, swallowed the Sisters whole and swam back to the depths of the whirlpool. But, when he boasted about his meal to the other gods the next morning, they insisted he release the two women.
And so the women were reborn, free to pioneer new, unchartered territories, identifying and labeling all the good things of Earth so human beings can call them by name and know where to find them.
